I rather like both of these, which I also came across yesterday whilst cleaning things out.
They're oils done on a substrate of mount card or watercolour paper, with a coat of white gesso primer painted over to stop the oil from seeping through. I used plenty of turps, which not only gives a really nice textural effect when the oils are thinned down, but allows for broad, gestural mark-making with a big brush.
It also means that it dries quicker - great if you can't leave your pieces in the classroom at art school until the following week.
